This morning I thought about my better bedside clock coming with a built-in power supply that can power a separate loudspeaker so that the user can supply their own speakers if they want something better than the in-built loudspeaker.

But after looking at the supply for my PC speakers to find that it weirdly outputs 5.5V, I am... not sure that's a feature I can confidently build in. It would have to have adjustable voltage output so the user can match it to what their speakers expect.

For context: I was trying to think of this feature in terms of the user having some random set of PC speakers or similar to hook up to the clock, and those often require their own power supply as they have their own internal powered amplifier.

EDIT:
After skimming some info about PoE again, this is probably not a feature I can have active if the clock is powered via PoE. Not enough power can be delivered to supply both the clock AND speakers if PoE is used.

@dragonarchitect there is zero problem to place an universal amplifier in the clock, and just connect an passive 8Ohm speaker externally when someone wants

You might be surprised how well even the cheapest alarmclock can do if you just reconnect a external speaker in meaningful box
